Rising to the Challenge
Learning that his estranged brother is on the way to meet him - with 400 men in tow - Jacob reacts with “great fear and distress.” (Genesis 32) I want to take a quick look at the beautiful prayer he offers.
It’s to the point; it’s powerful. And it demonstrates an effective strategy for when we’re overwhelmed with challenges of our own.
Review Your Reasons
Jacob starts by recalling WHY he’s on this journey in the first place - in response to God’s command.
Henry Ford once said, “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.”
It’s true! Focusing on fears, failures, and all that could go wrong creates panic; focusing on our purpose and the prize at the end of the journey creates confidence.
Remember Your Victories
Secondly, he remembers where he started and realizes how far he’s come. Reminding ourselves of struggles we have met and overcome in the past gives us courage for the future. Mentally replaying our victories helps reassures us that we are up to the challenge! (This is even more powerful when we can recognize God’s hand in those victories.)
Release Your Fears
Next, I love how he goes right to the heart of his fear and states it so straightforwardly. Putting our fears in the hands of our Protector doesn’t have to be a long, analytical process. When we are overwhelmed, laying our concerns at the feet of our Savior should leave us relieved, not exhausted!
Rely on God’s Promises
Having laid out his fears, Jacob recalls God’s promises. As Christians, relying on the promises we have in Christ gives us security. There’s nothing that fortifies us more than knowing the battle is won before we even start it!
Relying on the plan, the power, and the promises of God - it’s a strategy that never fails.
So the next time you have a big job to do, a big worry on your hands, or a challenge you’re afraid you aren’t up to, do what Jacob did! You will find confidence, reassurance, and all the strength you need.
Blessings until next time! Kim
