ENRO
We started Day 1 with a big welcome assembly; even a crew from the local news channel came to capture the beginning of the project. The girls from each dorm on the painting list had chosen their colors and were eager to transform their living spaces. Some of the students said they’d asked to paint the dorms in the past but were told "no" because they might“waste the paint.” It was humbling to see their excitement and pride now that this simple dream was at last becoming reality.
Several of the kids came out to begin the work with us and more showed up every day, got involved and began taking initiative. One evening, we passed by the school and saw some of the boys already scraping one of the dorms in preparation for the next day’s work. By the final day, there were so many kids working that there wasn’t really room for all of us, and we actually ended up finishing a day ahead of schedule.
What seemed to us like such a small thing, to them, as students of “the poor school,” was a big thing because it meant someone noticed them… and someone cared.
